Ross Island : One of the most exotic of all the strings of islands in the Andaman & Nicobar group is the famous Ross Island, which stands guard at the mouth of Port Blair harbor. Ross island was the symbol of power during the erstwhile British Raj, named after the British surveyor Reginald Ross, this desolate island was transformed into a thriving township when the british established a penal colony on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands in the year 1858. In all about 500 personnel including officers, troops, Indian merchants and families lived at Ross Island.
